Blue Mountains Cultural Centre

About the Gallery

Located in the heart of Katoomba the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre encompasses the Blue Mountains City Art Gallery, Katoomba Library and Into the Blue, an interactive exhibition that explores the history and natural landscape of the Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains City Art Gallery features major touring, curated, regional and local exhibitions. Its Exposé Exhibition Program is dedicated to showcasing artists who reside in the Blue Mountains Region.

Collection Strengths

Launched in March 2014, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Fine Art Collection is continuously growing. Each artwork selected based on its excellence, relevance, value and ability to celebrate the cultural identity of the Blue Mountains. Through considered and strategic collecting, we are building a body of artwork that our community will cherish in years to come. Like all great art, the collection uplifts, inspires, educates, amazes, challenges, preserves our histories, reflects our beliefs, and will hold and protect the legacies of artists and donors who understand the value that the Arts plays in a healthy, vibrant and engaged society.

Programming Strengths

The Gallery exhibition and public programs draw extensively from the rich creatives living in the Blue Mountains region. The exhibition program includes in-house curated, national and international touring exhibitions. Exhibitions are accompanied by extensive public programming including artist and curator talks, workshops and artistic residencies. With a dedicated workshop space the program includes programs aimed at all ages and abilities, this includes extensive educational programming including gallery visits, art workshops and artist-led outreach. The Culture Centre also partners with Blue Mountains creatives and cultural organisations in artistic production, festivals and community events.

Exhibition Spaces

The Cultural Centre is a large single exhibiting space of 580 square metres and 170 linear metres, with a maximum ceiling height of 6.5metres. With 15 moveable walls ranging from 1.2 – 3.6 metres the space lends itself to multiple configurations allowing for flexible exhibition programming.
