Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney

About the Gallery

The Art Gallery of NSW is one of Australia’s flagship art museums. Our mission is to serve the widest possible audience as a centre of excellence for the collection, preservation, documentation, interpretation and display of Australian and international art, and a forum of scholarship, art education and the exchange of ideas. Celebrating our 150th anniversary in 2021, the Gallery is undertaking a significant expansion – the Sydney Modern Project – which will create a new art museum experience across two buildings connected by a public art garden. The Art Gallery’s new building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects, SANAA, brings together art, architecture and landscape in spectacular new ways with dynamic galleries and seamless connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. It will be a new prominent destination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture. The expansion is scheduled for completion in 2022.

Collection Strengths

As the state’s leading visual arts institution, the Art Gallery of NSW collection is enormously rich and varied. The collection spans Australian and international art with wide-ranging focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Asian art. The Gallery also holds Australia’s most comprehensive representation of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present day.

Programming Strengths

The Art Gallery of NSW offers an extensive and diverse range of public programs and events. The Gallery’s learning programs provide students direct encounters with art, artists and ideas. We encourage students and educators to develop critical-thinking skills and connect curriculum with our collections and exhibitions in new and inspiring ways.
